returning from the fireworks my Catalina 310 threw the belt, the alarm did not go off and engine overheated. towed back to rented slip marina and added new belt without any cooling issues.
motor-sailing back to my own marina engine ran about two hours. at my slip I removed engine cover to find oil spattered and catch pan with about a quart and a half of oil in it. cleaned the oil from the pan and replaced engine oil. started engine and saw a small leak behind the crank dampener. ordered the service manual from Marine Engine.com but of no help as that area is not described. went online with marinedieseldirect.com and printed the crank shaft asm. and found part no 299419 oil seal and 300144 bearing case cover.
MY QUESTION? can I simply remove the belt, dampener and bearing case cover to expose the leaking seal and simply replace with a new seal?? comments appreciated. deke

The correct oil seal pn is 299404 $16.00 on line plus shipping. Now how do I "jam" engine to enable crank pulley removal as the engine turns over as I try to loosen the nut?
