I have recently aquired a 1983 Catalina 30 with a Universal diesel engine with a co-owner. There were no operating manuals and the control panel in the cockpit is pretty worn in terms of the labeling.
The boat sat for an undetermined period of time, and apparently had some water inside the engine compartment at some point, as the engine has some rust on it, and the transmission has a good bit of rust.

We are not sure on the control panel which knob is the choke, and what the two pull out knobs are in general. Obviously one is choke, which we suspect is the one beside the key.

Also, we checked oil, needs to be replaced, but for kicks, tried to crank the engine. It does turn, but does not start. Thus need to know which is choke knob, and which is the "glow plug' which I believe must be pushed in and held.

Any and all susggestions welcomed!

Congratulations on your new boat. If there is a diesel engine there should be a glow plug button and a start button, and no choke -diesels don't have chokes. The glow plug button should be released before pressing start. If it's a gas engine, there will be no glow plug buttons because gas engines don't have glow plugs.

Engine and other manuals can be found on the C30 Association website. We have a pretty good assortment of information on your boat systems, which are in many cases identical to ours, on our C34 website: http://www.c34.org/wiki/index.php?title=Main_Page

One of the "pull cords" is the engine stop. Let me suggest someone go down and look at the engine where the thottle linkage is (to starboard) while the other pulls on the cord(s) to ensure function. A good start is pulling out the panel a bit to get a look at the back and check for corrosion, broken or loose wires and connections. Everything can be replaced on that panel.

What Universal engine do you have?

On our 1983 Cat 30 the panel reads (looking at it from left to right): blower, glowplug, ignition switch, start button. The panel connections can be seen from inside the port compartment by removing the back of the panel cover. There is a red light for oil pressure (add a 12v buzzer to it). We have the 5411 engine.

I have removed the original cockpit panel and installed a new one including new harnesses and wiring back to engine and other components. Do you need this panel?
