i recently purchased a 1980 catalina 30 with a universal 5411 (m15). does anyone know if i will have to jack up or pull the motor to replace an oil pan that has holes? is it possible to not move it all? any information is greatly appreciated.
for those interested, the pan will not come out with the motor in its current position. i am attempting to lift the motor and retrieve the pan if anyone has any ideas on how to best proceed.
Use your boom to lift the engine. Tie the main halyard to mid-boom plus use you topping lift for max strength. use your vang or a come along hooked to the main sheet boom bail most aft.
Yikes, I've also got a 1980 C30 recently purchased with the original 5411, but it has had extensive amount of work already done -new injectors, glow plugs, exhaust riser, water muffler, plumbing. I sure hope that they didn't do all that work & leave a leaky pan in place. But I hear that the C30 is famous for corrosion under the engine due to bilge water condensation forming under the pan - very close proximity to nasty bilge water.
Careful...when I pulled my engine the mount broke at the engine flange due to corrosion.
Easy pan fix idea - use JB Weld where the hole is. Smear it on with your finger. Worth a try!
I also think that the J B Weld is probably worth a try. A lot cheaper (5 bucks) & alot less of a headache, if it works. If not, back to the drawing board. I hope I don't have to wind up trying the same thing. I 've got a lil oil in the bilge, but I think its from a P.O. 's sloppy oil change.
