We have a catalina 30, built in 1981, and we need to replace our Universal Diesel engine model 5411. It is 11 horsepower. We spoke to a mechanic in Wisconsin that has a rebuilt Universal M-18 that he says is the same dimensions as the 5411, and it would give us a little more horsepower. We don't want to refit a lot of stuff. Does anyone out there know if this engine is able to replace the 5411?

From my Universal owners manual:

Weight: 5411 is 245#, M-18 is 255#
Length: 5411 is 25.6", M-18 is 24.8"
Height: 5411 is 21.2", M-18 is 20"
Width: 5411 is 20.7", M-18 is 20.7"

I have no idea regarding the motor mount locations. My 1986 M-18 has been a great engine in my Newport 28.

I doubt you would notice the HP increase. Later models had one of the M25 series engines (about 20 HP), which were considered adequate. If your going to repower you might as well do it right.
