Hello Boating Friends-
I have a 1996 Catalina 30 with a universal 25XP that has just started to have a large amount what I assume is water in the oil. I found this grey oily sludge in the bilge then checked the engine oil to find it overflowing with the same grey oily sludge. The engine oil was receintly changed with no problems noted. The cooling water with antifreeze that circulates through the engine and water heater is full so I am left to think that some how the raw water is getting into the engine oil. It does not seem like the a bad head gasket could do this nor a bad heat exchanger. I am left to think it is perhaps the raw water pump. Any help is greatly appreciated.

The Atomic 4 can suck water through the exhaust if cranked for over 30 seconds or so without firing with the thru hull open. Also a broken water lift muffler can introduce water if the pipe inside is busted before the muffler water line. Have no idea if this applies to diesels.

Yea the 25XP can too. Cranking it too long without it starting will fill the water lift muffler overflowing into the cylinders and down into the oil. If you have a factory muffler there is a valve at the bottom to drain it if yo have a problem starting it. If not then I agree with Stu the raw water pump may have a leak. Either way if you found the problem soon enough changing the oil, run it a short time to get the water out of the engine then change again.
