The great response that we got about our Universal diesel cold start problem on a single battery was great, and the problem has been solved. The bad news is that we don't know exactly what we did that fixed it. We did verify that our new batteries were 700cca as specified for the engine. Then we went through all the wiring connections, and the engine finally started OK. As several people mentioned, using the glow plugs for 30-60 seconds is important, even in moderate S.F. Bay.
