Well, I'm finally in the midst of my engine install. As I've said before, I'm replacing my 1GM with a brand new 2YM15 from Yanmar. According to all supposedly knowledgable parties, I was led to believe that my original tranny, Kanzaki KM2-A was compatable with the new engine, which is typically installed with KM2-P. Alas, it is not. While the gear ratios are the same, the mounting surfaces are different because of the depth of flywheel thickness.

So now, I am ordering the new tranny for a few grand more (Sue is going to kill me when she hears this news ). Only a few years ago, I rebuilt my tranny, so that money is out the window. Also, a few years ago, I installed new engine mounts at considerable expense. The new engine comes with mounts, and a deduct was not forthcoming if I attempted to use my fresh ones.

Shown is my compartment, which really needs to be cleaned! A few years ago, it was spotless, but that old Vetus waterlift sprayed water and carbon everywhere when it failed last year. (Well at least I didn't replace those parts - just patched them). The new one is shown in the photo. Also shown are my old (new) mounts - soon to be replaced.

I'm also replacing the tank, but I can't make a larger tank fit without a significant project, so I am just making it a few inches taller to give me an extra gallon. I think I'm going to re-route that vent line on the stbd side (left in the photo) to take that downward bend out. I think fuel collects in there when the tank is overfilled.

Scott, is it possible to swap out the bell housing to fit the old tranny?

You know, that's a good thought ... I am going to double check. I think I was told that the different thickness of the new flywheel eliminates that as an option, but I should make sure it can't be done. Thanks!

I was kind of thinking that I should keep the old tranny with the old engine just in case somebody could use both at some time - the old engine will be repairable. So I wasn't that upset about needing a new tranny. I almost leaned that way in the first place.

Ebay or craig's list those mounts and old tranny! I have a 3GM raw water cooled Yanmar so I don't think those mounts would work for me but I'm sure someone is going to need them before summer.

Keep us posted on the refit.

Scott, have you consider using 3YM20 instead? Any idea if your engine compartment is same as the 280 ? Thanks.
