I recently purchased a 1971 Contest 30 and cannot identify the model. Most contests seem to have full skegs yet this boat has a truncated skeg. (picture included) Can anyone identify the boat and give me some info on it. I ave emailed conyplex for info, but have not yet replied. Best Regards, ASV

Contest model

Hi Antonio -- this looks like a Contest 30, Mark 2. I own a 1972 Contest 30 Mark 2. The difference between the Mark 1 and Mark 2 is the deck, cockpit, and cabin profile. For example, the Mark 1 has teak cockpit combings and an older fashioned look to the deck and cabin. Please let me know if I can be of any further assistance. Steve

Contest 30 Mark 2 ?

Thanks Steve, I've just returned from a visit to the boat. I was very impressed by the boat's construction. Yes it has the fibreglass combings and the modern cabintop with two windows(ports) in the main cabin and two smaller ones forward. What I found curious was the size of the Starboard settee/berth. Is that what's called a coffin berth....small. This boat has a stainless steel tiller and an old Danish gas engine.... Does that correspond to yours? I've been looking for specific information on this model and have come up dry. (Googling Contest Sailboat gives you thousands of returns, but little on this boat. I was speculating on the possibility that the boat was improperly registered and is actually a Contest 29 but I have been unable to get a image of the rudder of said boat. Honestly, I'm somewhat perplexed by this rudder as most vintage Contests I've seen have a full skeg. Then again... who knows. I am pleased that you have the same boat. Presently I sail an Albin Vega, another sturdy, sweet european classic. I would be very interested to hear you comments/review of this boat as I have heard only good things about vintage Contests. BTW I usually singlehand the Vega and look forward to doing the same with the Contest. Best Regards Antonio

Contest 30 Mark 2

Mark, I emailed Conyplex for information on this boat. Unfortunately, most of the information was lost in a fire in 2002. I've seen pictures and specs on a boat referred to as a Contest 29 Type 2 which has the modern cabintop and cockpit but there seems to be no referrences to the 30 Mark 2. If you refer to the Url that I've included you will see the hole that exists for the Mark 2. Anyways, I'm looking forward to the ice breaking and the beginning of the sailing season. Warm Regards, Antonio Virgini
