Un-stepping H26 Mast - Getting It Started

Usually, when un-stepping the mast of my H26, I point the boat into the wind to help with getting the mast started on its descent. Sometimes, however, it needs a little more help getting started. I have put my back (literally) into it. Even this method is difficult at times when I'm doing it solo. Are there any methods others use that won't put the mast (or the mast un-stepper) at risk? When I dropped the mast on my H260 at Smith Mountain Lake I had to push it the entire way down. My brother-in-law was quite impressed. I use the mainsheet and a gin pole.

Brian;

If you have roller furling and you are leaving the sail on, that can create that situation to some degree. If the shrouds are over tight that can also cause an issue. However, I did have to give a push for the mast to go back on many boats.

I commenterd in a previous post (with picture) that I use a Warn Pulzall portable electric winch. I hook up one end to the anchor locker D ring and the other to the spinnaker line hooked up to the gin pole. I can raise or lower the mast while looking directly at the rigging. I can stop, slow down, and even reverse the process if a shroud appears to be binding. Using the Pulzall takes almost all of the stress out of the process, especially if you are doing it solo.
