We are looking to purchase a 2001 Beneteau Clipper and would like to know how to tell where it was built. In the manual, it says that the builder is Beneteau SA. We can't find a vin number on the rear. This particular vessel has a Perkins motor. This seems unusual to us as most Beneteaus come with Volvo motors.

Actually the 361's had either Westerbeke or Yanmar engines. I'd ask about it's origins. If need be get on board and see what language the operatings labels are in. Also check to see what the AC outlets look like. Look for anything that would indicate what market it was built for. Good luck.

a Perkins engine. Look for the tag in the cockpit, just below the starboard locker lid.

Mine was built in France and has a Perkins M-108 engine. The VIN is usually situated on the starboard side upper hull under the toerail at the stern. I would be a little suspicious if the vessel did not have a VIN. Maybe the boat was stolen at some point.
