I just bought a new pvc dink and need to glue registration numbers on it. Can I use the two part pvc cement I buy in the hardware store to do this?

PVC cement from the hardware store is for rigid PVC pipe. I would not recommend. Go to West Marine (or similar) and buy the proper adhesive. If not expect the numbers to start peeling off with in days of application.

Paint

Get yourself a stencil and paint them on. Stick the registration decal on the transom. Then your done with it. Have never seen glue on letters stay glued on.

richk,

I bought a 2 part glue from Defender to install my boatnumbers pvc strips to my dinghy. I planning to glue the strips sometime this week and I am sure that I will have extra glue. PM me if you would like to pick up the leftover glue. Are you setting the numbers individually?

The marine cops in north AL just loving giving warnings (not sure if they write tickets) about not having your decal on the bow.

The best bet is to use the stencil method and paint the on the numbers. The stencil set that you can purchase includes a paint that is flexible and won't crack or peel off when you inflate and deflate the dinghy.

I know that most states and the fed require the state registration adjacent to the numbers, and there are plastic plaques that you can purchase for this purpose, but you are right back to the glue issue. I have those and purchased some pvc glue in a tube from Lowe's for a couple of bucks. It has worked well for the last couple of seasons.

Most dinghy owners around here do, in fact, attach registration tags to the transoms. Law enforcement folks seem to be intelligent enough to realize that the tags won't stick to pvc and don't make a big deal out of it.

i pu tmy decal inside the transom so it doesnt rub off at a dinghy dock....bostix is the marine brand of best glue for pvc dinghies--or call dinghy doctor in san diego--i believe they are now online..they are very very smart......fine folks as well....and, DO paint the numbers on--is only way they stick--i do mine on the inside of the pontoons in a place where no one sits.....as long as they can see them there should be no problem, unless ye has nazis as "poh-poh"..gooodluck.....

i have used the plastic number boards--they get stolen and lost...is easier and safer to just paint the numbers onto the boat--

Here you go:
http://www.whitewaterdesigns.com/home/wd2/multilist_7/adhesives_solvents_repair__canoe_kits.html

Scroll down to Vyna-bond and then also to the 2 part Vinyl/urethane adhesive.

The Vyna-bond (+MEK) works great for high stress joints/patches ... Havent used the 2-part but most repair shops seem to be using that now ... AND ultimately over a long time PVC boats will be emitting a gummy chemical (dioctylpthalate) which will definitely lessen the strength of the glue bond ... so you may have to at a later time repeat the repair.
