Two questions...

I was wondering what the best line to use for reefing my mainsail. I have a Catalina 27' with two reef points. Also, the tiller is laminated wood and the laminations are starting to separate due to weathering. The wood is still hard, but I was wondering if this is a job I can do myself, I should have a professional glue it back together, or I should simply buy another one. Thanks

Tom, I had the same thing happen to the tiller on my C-27. After talking to some folks on the dock, they recommended that I replace it.I was able to pick up a new one for about 60 or 70 bucks. It was well worth the money - looks great!Rob

Thanks Rob,I looked at the Catalina website, and this one, where would I go to get one? I would like one that has more of a bend in it since I am tired of it hitting me and my passengers in the knees.Thanks,Tom

Reefing line

I have a smaller boat, but I use 1/4" Sta-Set line for my jiffy reefing setup. Yours might be better with 5/16" (or larger?) line. My Catalina owners manual has all the line sizes and lengths for the boat.

Check West Marine

West Marine sells Catalina specific tillers of various sizes/shapes. Just make sure the attachment point is identical to your current one (size, holes, etc). My tiller was starting to delaminate just a little so I drilled about 3-4 holes all the way down, taped all exits, poured in epoxy & clamped it. Turned out great!LaDonna

Tom, I found mine at The Sailboat Shop in Austin, Texas. You can get their number in the Austin yellow pages online, or just call 512-555-1212. I believe Claude (owner) has a couple left. Otherwise, I would take LaDonna's advice and check West Marine. If there is not one near you, they will ship the part to your doorstep. My new tiller has the standard curved handle that forms a gentle arc. Best of luck!Rob Rich
