Two-Part Epoxy

Dear Sailors, need your wisdom. I have successfully added a product by the name Penetrol to my one part paint before with excellent results. The paint had less sag, was very shiny and dried slower. Can I add Penetrol to a two-part epoxy paint?

Thanks,
Mark

NO! Epoxy is not really a paint, it is a polymerization reaction that creates very long molecules that become a solid as the size of the molecules gets very large. Paints are materials that are dispered in a solvent and as the solvent evaporates the residue covers the substrate and penatrol is an additive that works well with oil based paints because it slows the drying process and allows for the paint to level (higher gloss etc.). As the epoxy cures (not dry) you will form a situation were you have (on the molecular level) a slurry of solids dispersed in the penatrol oil.

If you want slower cure, keep it cool or use a slower hardener (I know, technically it is not "hardener").

If you want less sag, use a thickener. Silica/cabisil is the most popular, there are several others for different needs.

If you want it thinner/greater penetration, keep it warm, or use a penetrating epoxy (git rot or other brands), or use acetone or alcohol as a thinner (these will allow the epoxy to cure, but will degrade the strength somewhat).

Remember epoxy is not UV resistant, it needs protection from the sun.

Intended for oI’ll and alkyd paints, I doubt it would mix well but you should ask the manufacturer to be sure,
