Two holding tank vent lines?

Peggy,
In an old post I read, you said "Nor do I even recommend two vent lines in all installations...often one will do just as much." I read something in Practical Sailor recently (or it might have been Cruising World) where a contributor said he installed a second vent line with a solar fan to draw air into the holding tank, and the other vent line allows it to flow out. Is a setup like that unnecessary, or would it be more likely to keep things smelling sweet?

There is no "one size fits all" venting solution

In 90% of installations a single 1" or 1.5' single vent line is all that's needed. If it's not, we can spec out the right answer for YOUR boat.

Hi Peggy
After reading your book How to get rid of Boat odors, I purchased a new aft holding tank for my Catalina 42. I had Ronco install a 1.5 inch vent in addition to the 5/8 inch vent. I still get BAD odor from the holding tank when flushing and realize that I have the anaerobic bacteria instead of aerobic, which means more fresh air. I wonder if there is a 1.5 inch blower that I can install and connect to 12 volts? as being at the bak of the boat not much air is blown in by natural means. I would appreciate any advice as the "Admiral" is ready to mutiny.
Thank you

You're on the right track with a 1.5" vent...

But apparently the vent line routing defeats the whole purpose of going with a larger diameter vent line. I don't think you need a blower...just some vent line modification and maybe a different tank product.

But if you did need a blower, it shouldn't push air into the tank, it should PULL air through the tank.

Send me an email (EMAIL, please, not a PM) and let's get set a time when we can talk instead of swapping 15 emails apiece.

We've connected...

...And hopefully solved his problem by just changing the way he was using Odorlos (too little, not often enough). He'll report back and let us know.
