How can you tell a standard rig from a tall rig without measuring the mast, Can you eyeball the differance? {Cat 27}. 2nd question, As soon as I turn on the key but "not" start the engine, the fuel pump makes the tick, tick, tick and doesn't stop ticking. Shouldn't it build a pressure in the line then stop ticking? thanks, jack

Bow Sprit

I believe you can tell by sight - the tall rig has a bow sprit extension to accommodate the higher mast. No - the fuel pump will tick all day long - at least mine does on a C36.

Tick tick is good

There is a return line that brings fuel BACK to the fuel tank. If you don't hear the tick, tick, then start worrying. Suggest you read up more on diesels and how they work. You should also check to see if your electric fuel pump is before or after your Racor (water separator / fuel filter). If it is before the filter, you should re-pipe it to after. There is a small filter on the bottom of the pump that can catch debris and stop th pump action. Stu

I can second Stu's comment

My electric pump on an '87 C-30T was on the suction side of the fuel filter, and I was always plugging the filter on the bottom of the pump. It didn't occur to me to move the pump to after the filter. Steve Alchemist C-30T #4764 Alchemist C-320 #909
