on my 3GMF (1983) the alternator seems to have a twist of about
20° between the alternator pulley and the idle pulley at the top of the belt.
Any one know if there should be a spacer in the alternator piviot hole or a larger bolt?

I'll get pictures up as soon as I can resize them

It appears from the third photo the you have a bolt with too small diameter for the hole size in the alternator. Suggest you obtain a bushing to take up the difference, you could also use a bronse sleve bearing. Get one the same length as the ear on the alternator

If you can't find a thin enough bushing, try a metric bolt. We have found that the M25 engine alternator bracket repair kit ships with SAE bolts which are too narrow, and metric bolts correct the problem. Good luck.

You may find that your bracket hole has been "molested" by the undersized bolt and is no longer straight. You can likely take the bracket to a machine shop and have them re-drill it over-sized for the next bolt diameter, either metric of SAE. It will then be parallel to the mounting face of the bracket the bolts to the engine block..

On the rear of the alt there is also a compression spacer in the ear that takes up the slack between the ears & bracket. I often find this has somehow disappeared. Make sure that shim is there!!

Thanks for all the suggestions I was going to fit a larger bolt for now. If i need to do more then that I,ll go to a larger output alterator. :$:$:$

I doubt that a larger bolt is going to completely correct that. Need to check if there are shims where they don't belong at the other attachment points. If you shim the front mount until pulleys are parallel, how is the alignment?

No shims on the rear ear. I'd hate to take the bracket off as it appears to be part of the water pump housing.
the bolt that was in there was a 8mm and I tried a 10mm and the SAE equivalent both were too large to go through the alternator.

There are three shims in between the front ear and the alternator and they will align up the pulleys but the tension of the belt twists the alternator

Anyone know the part number of the compression spacer? I could order one and have it ready when I get out that way next week.
