I've always dreamed about sailing around the world and getting paid while doing it. I am a software developer so all I really need to do my job is an internet connection and a laptop and of course, a boss who is willing to trust me. DirecTV has something called DirectWay which is satellite internet. Has anybody ever seen a dish on a boat and if so, do they make stands that can rotate to keep it in line with the direction it needs to be? If so, then all I have to do is find a boss who would let me work from my boat :)

Internet Access

I'm trying to do a similar thing. KVH has the only system right now but it is very expensive to by and operate. A better solution on the horizon can be found at the link below, the Speedray 3000. Hopefully it is not just vaporware.

Speed Ray spec's

Re the SpeedRay 3000 - Satellite TV and High Speed Internet Reception ~ If I understand them correctly, these specifications read pretty good: Pointing System * Elevation range: 20̊ to 70̊ ~ * Azimuth range: 360̊ (pitch & roll ?) * Tracking rate: 30̊ / second * Satellite search, recognition and tracking: Fully automated GPS based Nothing wrong with “KVH”, except the cost! Sea Tel, directv-astra

Dishes will rotate and track well, however, I've crossed the atlantic several times using a Sea Tel system, sailed north from bodo norway to spitzenbergen, and through the carribean. There were many gaps in reception. I lost tv for many hours, once in the middle of a red sox game. These systems can also cost around $5000. I hope you don't need to being in constant contact. Good luck.

Iridium is still available

This coverage is truly worldwide - with I think the exception of the poles. That's why the department of defense insisted the satelites not be de-orbited. Anyway, they sell a data link for a couple of their phones - they need to upgrade to uSB. The service isn't cheap - or wasn't the last time I looked into it. They also sell external antennas designed to be installed on the masthead. http://www.iridium.com/service/iri_service-detail.asp?serviceid=2&method=direct
