Just wondering as a new 216 owner if anyone has capsized their boat and under what conditions? Does it self right? How far can you heel before trouble? I like to go fast, but my wife is apprehensive...

Never yet

I have a 240 and the couple times the boat heeled over too far the rudder comes out enough that the boat just gets pushed around back up into the wind on its own. Funky feeling to it, but so far...so good. I find that under normal conditions it is better to not let it heel to that point. From what I have read and just for comfort purposes, heeling that much doesn't increase speed and more than likely just decreases it. Have fun

comments...

I've been following this message board for quite a while and haven't heard of anyone capsizing (or turtling) their H216. Mine seems to head up before I get into any real danger of laying over. When I keep heading up to much, I reef to reduce sail. You can reef early to keep the heeling more manageable. Over time, you will get used to more heeling. Avoid sailing in thunder storms to avoid lightning and "down bursts". Since no one has apparently laid their H216 over on its side (mast just touching water), we don't know if it would self-right, stay in that position, or turtle. Any volunteers to find out?

Heeling does not = go fast

Actually if you are heeling too much, you can go faster if you reduce the angle of heel. You can reduce sail and actually speed up, and it is also more plesant sailing anyway. The idel angle of heel is about 20 degrees.

I like it

I agree with the boat heading up in heavy winds. It will take a good gust and/or wave to knock this boat over. As for myself, I enjoy a good heel every now and then. If no one is complaing, ride it out, you may sometimes enjoy a good heel over additional speed.

Travis: True, but he said he wanted to go fast.

A good heel is fun at times. But John was saying he likes to go fast. Heeling more than 20 degrees makes you go slower.

Back to main question....

Thanks for the info. I guess I am still wondering if anyone has laid their boat over in a strong gust or large wave???
