There seems to be at least two schools of thought when it comes to turnbuckles. One school says to grease them, the other says to leave them dry, as grease attracts dust. One source suggested using liquid dishwashing soap, as this would allow for easy adjustment for intially adusting shrouds after stepping the mast, but would be washed off by the rain; therefore, no dirt build-up. Comments please .

turnbuckles

Stainless steel works best - read lasts longest - when exposed to air. The high chromium content forms a thin barrier that protects the underlying structure. It's best to rinse them often to remove salt, use some WD40 when adjustments are necessary, and then clean them off. Stainless needs to breathe.
