Catalina 30 stirling cove
just picked up a 1989 cat 30 tall rig, instructions to use the gas propane stove in the galley are not helpful to get the stove lit, can someone give me the basics................. so far full tank propane on board and hooked up to automatic switch, lpg swirtch is on but nothing happens when turning valves on the stove

Push in on the control and push the igniter or use a lighter. You then have to hold the control in for about 30 seconds to make sure the burned stays lit. The. You can let go. If you haven't used the stove in a while you might have some air in the lines to purge out. This means holding the control in longer.

thanks this, we'll give this a try, same issue as on a little heater i have in my beach house

can you confirm then that there is a pilot lite on this stove and that once lit it stays lit till you cut off the gas supply and is the pilot located right around the burner or in a tube under the top of the stove

Absolutely not. The goal of any marine gas system is to keep the gas in the tank/locker except for the moments you are actually using it, even in the event of human error or hardware failure. That's why the solenoid is there.

A pilot light on the stove would be very risky, as it would require the gas line to be open at all times.

We turn off the tank at the valve stem when not in use.

If it hasn't been used in a while get one of those long BBQ lighters.

Light the lighter and hold it to the burner, with the solenoid on push in the knob and turn it counter-clockwise to the stop. You'll hear the air purging out of the line, once the propane starts to flow the lighter will kick it off.

There's an "L" shaped thermocouple on the burner. Once it starts to change color let the knob out and adjust the flame by continuing to turn it counter-clockwise.

After you've lit it once this way you should be able to use the red igniter button to get it going.
