I have a 1980 Hunter 33 and the rig needs a bit of attention. It is definately not straight anymore and I think I know how to adjust that but, are there any tricks ? And how thight are the cables supposed to be ? Thanks for any info you may have.

loos gauge
You need to get or borrow a loos gauge. First line up the mast with the halyard being equi-distant from both port and starboard sides of the boat. By this, I mean that the halyard should reach the same point on each side of the boat. The mast should also be straight from fore to aft. After making sure that the mast is perfectly straight, use a loos gauge and adjust the tension according to the shroud diameter. There should a table with the gauge. This is followed up by checking the shrouds under load while sailing. The windward side should be taught and leeward might appear to have a small amount of slack.

Your idea to measure the 'in column' is OK, but not by using the halyard. Most halyards have way to much stretch in them so it becomes difficult to judge how much tension to pull on. Better to use a steel tape and run it up the mast with the halyard.
