Tuning the 23.5 standing rigging

Is there any information anywhere for free that tells you how to set the tension on the rigging on the 23.5 ? I need to replace a couple of bent upside down "T" things. I found a video for $25.00 but I'm sure it covers rigging that has a backstay by Brian Toss. Can Hunter help. Has anyone ever done this ? Fred

I just bought a '96 26 last fall and went searching for the same info. (1) Confirm recommendations for shroud tension (percentage of breaking strain) directly with Hunter. For the 26, it's 20% for the uppers and 10% for the lowers. (2) I have Brian Toss' rig tuning and inspection videos and they're worth the money. They were excellent for a newbie like me. His suggested tension recommendations matched Hunter's. He also shows you how to use a tension gauge. (2) Search the Sailnet.com e-mail archives for "buying an h31/bird in hand" in the Hunter list. This contains a very good explanation of what Hunter was trying to say in the owner's manual (but failed).

Over doing it

10% you say!! Well what ever you do, DO'NT over do it!!! When your done, go to the back of the boat and look a long the rail. It should be all the same hight, even when you come to the place where the side stays, attach to the boat. If you over do it, this part will be much higher. The more you snug the rig down. the more this "hump" will grow!! I'v raced my 23.5 with a "kind of" lose rig and have always finished top 3. I like this boat, My wife likes this boat, Its to bad the co. stoped making the 23.5. Dave B. Nebraska

10 % not over doing it

I can concur with the earlier article saying 20% and 10% (for the H-26) It should be said that the Toss video is excellent, the best boat related video I've seen. After having seen the video, we've done a 180 in our "tuning thoughts". It seems an earlier rigging failure may have been from "under tuning" and the shock loads that can be cause by it. I don't question whether you can sail well with it undertuned, but if you want to avoid possible rigging damage or people damage (de-masting), I would suggest tuning it to specs. Good luck.
