How critical is it to tune the rig? I do not race. I had it done last year and the rigger was on the boat 50 minutes ( I was there). Cost $80.00. Took down the mast to do electrical work. When restepped, I was asked if I wanted it tuned at the cost of $300.00!!! The old rigger has quit. Is this necessary? Is the price reasonable?

If he's good...

... that's might not too bad. To do the job right means tuning the rig at the dock, then going sailing to finish the job. A couple or three hours at a minimum. You're paying for expirience, not time. Have him explain what he does for that $300 and why its better than the $80 job. Another option - do it yourself. Brion Toss has some good videos on rig tuning. Buy a Loos gauge (or two in my case). Its not hard to do. Then spend a afternoon tuning.

do it yourself....

First of all, if you had this mast work done by a yard they should basic tune it when they re step the thing. Sounds like they tried to take advantage of your inexperience. Tuning your rig is not rocket science and I certainly wouldn't pay anyone $300 to do it unless your rig is extremely complicated. You really need to know how to do it yourself so you can make adjustments as needed. There are tuning guides on almost every class association and sailmaker websites. A tuning guide comes with every catalina owner's manual. You might also try a google search for tuning guides for your boat model. Here's a nice collection of tuning info from a C&C website. http://www.cncphotoalbum.com/index1.htm and here's a basic guide by Rod Davis for Lidgard Sails http://www.lidgardsails.com/tips.php?news_id=37
