My newly acquired Hunter 240's standing rigging is too slack. Does anyone have the manufacturer's specs on adjusting tension on the rigging?
Thank you in advance.

You could try Hunter, but my experience with them was that they referred me to the manufacturer of the spars.

The spar manufacturer told me to ask Hunter.

Bottom line- nobody wanted to stick their neck out and put numbers on the rig. Finally I got a DVD by rigger Brian Toss (an excellent DVD, IMHO) and with advice from other owners of my model boat I made some adjustments. If I remember correctly a good starting point for the shrouds is about 15-20% of either the working load or the breaking strength of the wire. I would have to look it up to be sure.

The first thing is to find out what size wire you have. This sets the maximum tension allowed. This will apply to rigs that are left up full time for boats similar to yours. Start by adjusting the uppers for proper mast bend and tilt port/starboard. then, snug up the lowers by hand. Then, tighten the uppers and lowers evenly, maintaining proper bend and tilt until you reach ~10% of that breaking strength (that is about 230 lb for 5/32"). Go for a sail in moderate winds and see if the leeward shrouds get floppy. If they do not, your tension should be pretty close to where you need them. If not, tighten them about 1/4 turn at a time until they no longer 'dangle'.

Rig tune info:

Do yourself a favor. Go to the Selden site (selden.com,I think) and download the 84 page booklet "Hints and Advice for tuning your rig". Download it, print it, or beg a copy from them at a boat show. They'll give you one if you're entertaining. It contains the CORRECT info you need to tune the B & R rig. This address should allow you to download the booklet.

Get yourself a LOOS professional gage. They can be found at a reasonable price via the internet. I can't remember for certain where I got mine but it was a good price. You just need to look deeply. Remember: Just as you can't torque a head without a torque wrench, you can't tune a rig correctly without a gage.

Very important: You must set pre-bend before tuning the rest.
