Tuning An O'Day 34

Tom -Assuming the boat is rigged and in sailable condition then tuning becomes a boat specific enterprise. People are often looking for specs on thier model boat but you are better off tuning the boat according to performance. You did'nt say what year it was built. according to my book the 34 is supposed to have 8" of rake. however according to Peter Boyce,the designer at C.Ramond Hunt, O'Day changed from lead keels and ballast to iron that is considerably lighter. they also changed the position of the masts on the same models to compensate for excessive weather helm.I.E on my 30 in 1980 they moved them 3" forward. this all affects the balance of the sail plan. so what I'm saying is the 8" rake is a starting point. You may need to adj. it several times to get a neutral helm. On my 30 they called for 9" and to get it right I finally ended up with 2". If you tune it in this manner you will be happy with the huge increase in performance and ease of handling.good luck!
