planning on motor sailing to catalina island from long beach this Sun morning, coming back Mon. Checked noaa marine weather, it says "high surf advisory",
>>>
A LARGE NORTHWEST SWELL GENERATED BY A STORM IN THE GULF OF
ALASKA WILL REACH THE CENTRAL COAST THIS EVENING...WITH SURF
BUILDING RAPIDLY OVERNIGHT. THE SURF IS EXPECTED TO PEAK ON
SATURDAY...WHEN 15 TO 20 FOOT BREAKERS WILL BE LIKELY ON
NORTHWEST FACING BEACHES.

does this affect me or only surfers at the beach? (as a sailor, I only need to be concerned with wind and swell, right?)
checked swellinfo.com for Sun, http://www.swellinfo.com/surf-forecast/los-angeles-california-south. swell is "W 1.9 ft @ 16 sec", seems pretty doable, right? doesn't seem to be inline with the noaa advisory.
>>>
SURF
Waist high W long period swell in the morning with occasional stomach high sets. This drops a bit in the afternoon.
CONDITIONS
Clean in the morning with E winds less than 5mph. Semi glassy/semi bumpy conditions for the afternoon with the winds shifting to the SW.
