We just got back to the boat (1991 Passage 42) after a couple of weeks away for the holidays. The freezer is working fine, but the refrigerator is no longer functioning. I hear the fan running. Every 20 seconds the DC current draw jumps an additional 10 amps for two seconds and the fan dies. Then the current draw stops and the fan resumes. This is one area of the boat I have not had to tinker with since we bought it two years ago. Any input would be appreciated. Is the refrigeration system generally repaired at a component level, or does it mean replacement of the system ? (10 years old)

check compressor

It's most likely the electronic control module, but the compressor should be checked B/4 replacing it. Trace the module cord (black, 4 conductor)to the side of the compressor. Pop off the spring clip and remove the plastic cover. Unplug the module from the compressor and you will see 4 pins in an offset diamond pattern. Put the common (black) probe on the bottom pin. From the bottom pin to the top pin you should read 2.5 to 4.5 ohms. From the bottom to the 2 middle pins you should get .3 to .6 ohms. You're looking for an open coil or shorted windings. If the compresser ohms out good, and you're satisfied your power supply is good, replace the control module with part number AB3016.

control module or wiring?

Check your wiring by verifying there is no voltage drop at the control module as the compressor is making a start attempt. If you are certain the wiring to the system is not the problem and the compessor is ok electrically, then the most likely cause is the electronic module which controls the compressor. These can be purchased through A/B or frigoboat. Cost is 198.00 for a frigoboat replacement. This module will replace any danfoss control module used on the BD30 or earlier compressors. To order or for more info call 410-224-7627 or online www.frigoboat.com
