I was anchored in Newport Harbor 2 days ago. I've uploaded 2 videos I took of the racing activities. -links below.
I counted 3 simultaneous races just in my immediate area. Big boats and small. All avoiding waterway traffic (per regs) and anchored boats as expected obstacles.
It was a fantastic day. 75 degrees, 10 knot wind, flat bay water.
This is how they race here pretty much every day. Nothing but fun among refined and true yachtsmen, with their beautiful well-kept boats, courteous behavior, precise and quick handling, competitive nature, love of the sport, and camaraderie with all things sailing.
This is my definition of gentlemens' informal racing, in any waterway, harbor proximity, or known sailing area.

Very nice. That's a NHYC Harbor 20 race. They have like 30 of those little suckers there. Great boats. Now boats on buoys or at anchor are considered obstructions, even I would frown upon someone asking one for 'racing room'! ;^)
