I have a CD 26. In 2005, my boat storage yard replaced my broken Groco head with a Jabsco Model 29090-2000 manual marine toilet. In 2007, the pump failed and was replaced. No problems in 2008. In 2009, the toilet began back flowing liquid after each use. I do not have a vented loop system. I have an intake hose from the seacock, an out take hose thae runs into a sealed holding tank with top deck pump out, and a screened air hose that vents to the side of the boat. My boat is currently on the cradle and I would like to troubleshoot this as best I can before the Spring launch. I phoned Jabsco who advised me to first disconnect the hoses and double check that there is no blockage before buying any replacement parts. I have never disconnected any hoses and read an article in a recent Sailing magazine that mentioned there is a pressure built up in the hoses. ( My holding tank was emptied before haul out). What steps would you take to trouble shoot this problem?

First thing I'd check...

Is the holding tank vent for a blockage. 'Cuz your described symptoms sound like a system that's become pressurized...and the reason a system becomes pressurized is because air in the tank displaced by incoming waste has no place to go any more.

The two most common locations for a tank vent line blockage are the vent line thru-hull and the the vent line connection to the tank...both the tank hose fitting and that end of the vent line. What causes vent line blockages? Dirt dauber nests...corrosion...spiders...and waste spilling out the vent when you're heeled. That last one also causes the blockage at the tank end. So take a screwdriver blade--or whatever works--and scrape out the holding tank vent through hull...then remove the vent line from the tank and clean it out AND the tank hose fitting too.

THEN I would pump out and very thoroughly rinse out your tank to prepare it to be winterized.

And finally, I'd replace the toilet next spring with one that's decent quality.

You're welcome to email me if none of the above works for you...'cuz you've got to solve this problem to be able to use the toilet on your boat!

For the tank vent, I wonder if anyone has used a thru-hull type fitting that would allow a garden hose to be screwed on from outside the boat to flush the vent line?

Peggie,

Just got your book and read the troubleshooting. Agree that the Jabsco is junk but don't you advise to replace the joker valve essentially annually? If he clears the vent he may be good, but beyond that why wouldn't you consider the joker before replacement? I too have a manual jabsco, no doubt installed by a PO because it was cheap and he knew he was selling. Are they really beyond any repair in your opinion? What is so poor about the design? If you have expounded on this previously I apologize.

You can't stand there with the hose nozzle pressed against an open mushroom fitting for 1-3 minutes?

Yep...but not as a cure for backflow.

Because I don't think that's the cure for his problem

Look a the economics: you can replace the whole toilet for as little as $100...a rebuild kit is more than half that price. So why would you spend as much money for a repair as a new one?

What is so poor about the design?BobM[/quote]

Nothing wrong with the design--which is no different from any other compact manual toilet design...it's the quality of the materials that's poor.

People brag that their Jabsco toilets have been trouble-free for five whole years...a Raritan PH II is typically trouble-free for TWENTY years! So why would anyone spend $100 every year or two to replace a jabsco pump when they can upgrade to the top rated manual toilet for $219?

But...Your boat, your money....

With some other nozzle, yes, but with a pistol grip (as I can tell you), NO. I'm looking for something more efficient- maybe a hose with no end fitting. My vent is 1 1/4 inches. All the same, it's done while leaning over and through the lifelines upside-down and hold the hose and hope my glasses don't fall off.

Thanks Peggie. I couldn't find this concisely written during my search. Regarding the back flow, I will go study how these units work some more. Regarding repair, I will follow your sage advice and upgrade to the Raritan pump assembly when my Jabsco acts up in four years. Any reason to buy it now (any thoughts they will discontinue that option?).?
