Trouble Shifting Gears on Universal Diesel

I have a 27' Catalina, and I have just recently started having trouble shifting gears. It shifts fine into neutral and reverse, but struggles to shift into drive. Does the engine control cable need to be replaced? Or can it be adjusted to push all the way into drive?

Start by getting back into the quarterberth and open the engine door. Now reach in and see if the transmission will shift at the source by hand, this is where the cable links up with the gearbox. It's always nice to have quick access to this spot in case the shifter does jack up on you and you need to manually shift, such as entering your slip.

Good advice. Do that when you're outside your marina or tied securely to firm, proven cleats.

Many times the adjustment can be made at the linkage. If not,check your cable condition, it's age may suggest replacement.

I shift at the gearbox in my slip when adjusting my stuffing box, kinda handy not running back to the cockpit and so on. Incidentally, Stu where do you pick up one of those aux. ignition switches for inside engine compartment, even one that will just temporarily clamp on will work.

Got the engine control cable adjusted, changes gears nice and smooth now. Thanks for the tips.
