Trying to replace trottle cable with an Edsen Steering system. Disconnected cable at engine and fed cable through to base of pedestal. ALso disconnected cable from pedestal by removing screw and pulling both trans and trottle cable out. Although I believe I loosened all connections the cable is very difficult to pull through pedestal. The cable is also being stripped as I pull it through pedestal. I can imagine how I will get the connector ends through the pedestal. What can be the problem. Did Hunter run too many cables through the same opening? Thanks

Hi Lewis, there is a cylindrical steel sleeve...

at the base of the pedestal that is a friction fit throttle and shifter cable keeper. It keeps these two cables and electrical wires against the side of the pedestal tube and away from the steering system. This sleeve needs to come out before you attempt to remove the cables. I found it easier to work with by unbolting the base of the pedestal from the cockpit sole. Before doing this you need to disconnect the steering cables from the quadrant. Doing the above makes it much easier to remove the cable keeper sleeve and replace any of the cables and wire. It sounds more difficult than it actually is. It actually saves you time and effort in the long run. While you're at it I would replace the shifter cable, too. Keep the old one as a spare. Edson says to replace these every five years or so, but I've found they last longer. Terry

Check for a cable housing connector.

Lewis: There was a housing mount on your engine to hold the cable housing stationary. There should also be one of these on the pedestal too. It is usually a screw that is on the forward or aft side of the pedestal tube. The purpose of this is to keep the housing from moving when you move the cable. Just loosen the screw and the cable should slide right out. Be sure that you get the new cable inside this mounting position when you install the new one. PS: Have you thought about replacing the throttle cable now too?
