Trip to St John,USVI or the Perfect Storm

This is a report of a trip from Cobb Island,MD trying to get to St John,USVI.

We got hammered off shore by a gale and then chased back to the east coast by tropical and becoming hurricane Sean. We were very lucky, the NARC was to the NE of us and one woman was washed overboard and another boat was abandoned.

Jim, That is way more excitment than I am good for. It sure does demonstrate that the boats can take more than people.

Glad you made it back okay. I was one of the ones following on facebook. It was nerve racking and we were worried about you. We knew that you were a good sailor and I believed that you would be okay.

I guess it will be a while before you do any serious blue water.

It sounds like you folks had some pretty good spirits and a sense of humor throughout the ordeal! We're glad you made it back in good shape!

How did that tropical storm sneak into the picture? Was it too far out to predict when you chose your weather window? I also wonder where you would have been if you had not had such an ordeal with the gale. If you had been further south with fairer conditions earlier, would you have been involved with the tropical storm? I guess there is no avoidance of foul weather no matter how it's sliced, at times.

All the weather predictions were expecting the low to develop behind us and move up the coast about 2 1/2 to 3 days after we took off. We expected to be about 300 miles out towards Bermuda. Of course weather does anything that is expected. The low came off the coast and moved east and started deepening almost on top of us. Couple of fellow sailors that were watching our track realized we were going to get smacked.

Now if this gale had not happened, we would have been about 500-600 out right in the path of TS Sean. http://www.wunderground.com/hurricane/at201119.asp

This storm is what caused such wild ride trying to get back to the east coast. 30+ kt winds for days.

At no time did we feel we were in any danger.

That sounds like an experience that is good for the BS sessions, but not good at all to live.

Jim....come to think of it....despite the 55 foot waves in 10 second intervals I bet that you didn't even spill one drop of rum! LOL
