Any trimming tips for a full-battened large roach main and how do you determine the proper batten tension?

Trim

Hi Dennis, welcome to ask the Sailmaker. Trimming a full batten main is basically the same as any other main. There are lots of things written on the subject, but very basically, keep the leech telltales flying aft, ease the main till the telltales stall or drop behind the main, trim sheet and adjust vang and traveller to get them all flying again. With batten tension, you want enough tension to keep the battens supporting the leech without falling to leeward, but not so much tension that the battens stay to one side when you tack. If you like to adjust your battens for different conditions, less tension for light air, more for heavier breeze. The upper one or two battens are most effected by these adjustments, the longer lower battens can be set and forget.
