Trim on Mast

I have a 1992 H28 and part of the black plastic trim that is on the forward edge of my mast came off (offering to Neptune). Can anyone tell me if this is just cosmetic or does it perform some important function? I am trying to decide if I want to replace the missing part, take it all off, or just leave it like it is. I have attached a picture showing the trim (it is the black strip facing up).

Trim?

Steve, by trim do you mean a black stripe around the mast, from the picture somewhat above the boom goose neck? If so, it is the factory marking for sail position for racing rule measurements of sail size for class competition. There should be a corresponding one at the top of the mast and at the aft end of the boom.

Steve, if you mean the plastic strip that runs...

the length of the leading edge it should be there to cover an extruded track built into the mast for a car. This car is often used to mount spin or whisker poles. Your mast maker can provide you with the car...for a price. At least that is what my mast maker told me. Terry
