Trick to the 25.5 pop-top??

I feel like I'm missing something? My 1984 Hunter 25.5's pop top does not come with a way to secure it open? I can be sitting in the slip with the top open, and if a wave comes through it slams shut. I know it's only a matter of time before it hits me in the head and knocks me out! Do I have to tie it open? Seems like they would have built it with some sort of locking mechanism, so maybe mine is missing something? Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

When you raise the top push it towards the mast. On the mast there should be an adjustable hook that slides up and down the groove in the mast. Slide the hook up and latch the groove around the pop top and tighten the hook. Hopefully the hook slide hasn't been lost at some point.

There was a hook on the mast for this purpose but on most 25.5s, including mine, it has long been broken off. I've seen it still intact before and not sure I would trust it anyhow. I use two bungies about 4' long that connect from the front two pop-top legs around the mast. One high and one low on the legs and it never moves despite heavy waves. Easy setup and removal too.

What Mr. Mac said

Mac is correct. I wish I had asked this before I drilled two holes in the top, and fashioned a support cable that went around the mast. The guy who purchased my 25.5 asked me why I put in this system when there was a perfectly useful hook already in the mast. Sigh.
