My friend John is a great sailor and successful racer. He owns a Trimaran built in the 70's which he bought for a song, a decade ago. Taking advantage of the vast supply great boats like this for very little money, he doesn't sink much $ into the boat. But he just bought a new North racing main. He just likes to daysail the tri, fast on our reaching winds.

He stores on the public landing near me so I've seen him each spring do some fairly extensive projects on the tri. Tough enough he pays twice as much as me, for his beam. He has to be craned in an out with a large rig, no other way for his boat. Plus, a trimaran is a difficult boat to cover to do repairs.

Very skilled with this stuff, John is also an architect, which he puts to good use for working on his boat. Being an architect, he's a compartmentalized thinker.

Each year I watch him build an enclosure on one of the amas, or the middle hull(one per year). Designed to be 'just strong enough',...these enclosures fit his project area, and he gets stuff done, on weekends and after work.

This spring the port amas began leaking water out of the cold moulded hull. Water had gotten through the cloth into the wood. No problem, he just cut the wet outer layer of wood out. Once dry, he'll repair, glass, fill, and paint, all inside the slender shed. Like me, he has to be off the public landing by the first of June. He'll make it.

John is skinny, which is a good thing working inside this ama. Built in Canada in the 70's he noticed the construction in this ama is different than the starboard. Then he recalled, this boat started as a Proa, and then was finished a year or so later, as the designed Trimaran (I don't recall the designer. It's fast!)

It warms up nicely in here even on an overcast day. We're right on the edge of the ocean.

the damage is extensive. This doesn't seem to bother John. He just gets it done. I'll see the crane boom from my house, sticking up above the trees and know Cloud Nine, is floating.

Really cool. I would love to see it in the water, and you know why!
