My old boat had the traveler near the stern, I find my H22's forward configuration much better. You don't tend to clothesline youself anywhere near as much, you really dont need a boom vang, and you dont have to worry about mangling your shins should the traveler be mounted across the cockpit.

No Boom Vang?

A boom vang is still quite handy for flattening the sail when you're off the wind. It provides you with much better performance and control. If you aren't convinced of this go sail a dingy. Have fun on the H2O! Larry Barnes

Larry, you are so right. Even though I now own an H23, I still sail my Missile (16 ft sloop-rigged planing dinghy) every so often for the heck of it and I gotta tell ya, the vang makes a huge difference off the wind. Without the vang the boat is nervous on a broad reach and hard to keep on plane because the boom rises and falls as the apparent wind changes. With the vang on good and proper, the ride becomes more controlled, the boat is less sensitive to mainsheet trim and it will get on plane and stay there with less work on my part. So, if you see some guy hiked out hard and grinning from ear to ear as his rudder throws up a roostertail, wave at me as I go by! Peter s/v Raven and former (?) dinghy pilot

My kind of skipper!

Peter Sauh, Hate to see anything go bye so fast but there's nothing like watching a boat do it's thing at full potential. Like the way you spin a yarn too! We're all having fun on the H2O now!! Larry Barnes "CNTRL SEA"
