I acquired a MacGregor 22 a while back. I finally have her all spruced up, but I cannot find any information on how to set up the traveler. I found a few pulleys in a box, but I could not find any information yet on how to rig it. I tried to find some photos online, but I could not find anything with enough detail to help me. If anyone has a diagram, picture or can point me to a internet link, I would really be grateful. Thanks

Traveler Setup Help

Valentina Owner, great looking boat. Thanks for the info. I will keep this info for future reference. My Mac22 has a different set up on the stern, from what I can tell it is using three pulleys and a cleat on the port side. The setup is triangular in shape, it connects to the end of the boom (stern end). I appreciate your input and if I don't get the setup info I need, maybe I can switch to your setup.

Traveler setup help

I have a 1971 Mac 22. My email is the dhblair that you see then: at msn.com
BTW, I used to live north of your location at San Luis Obispo, great area. I grew up there in the North West, the Great North Wet.
Thanks

I'm home now and can post it.

Sometimes a diagram is easier to understand.
I would recommend setting up a traveler. I will post a pict of mine.

Traveler set up.

Here is a picture of my current set up. I chose to put it on that step rather than straddle the seats because of the cushions. Raising it would make stepping over it more difficult. I will add another cleat and place them on both ends to control the taveler. That will allow me to move the sheet block past center.

Traveler Setup resolved

That was it, your diagram was exactly what I needed. I like your current option as well. I also have a Tanzer 22 that has a similar setup. It is connected to the floor of the cockpit, but it is fixed to one point in the middle. It is handy because I can operate it from the stern while one hand is on the tiller.

Thanks again, Dean

cell?

Are you in jail Frank?

Does anyone have a good writeup on how to properly USE a traveler? I feel the need to install one but I don't know how much I would benefit from it. I sail mainly on a reservoir that is approx 9500 acres

It's a padded cell ;D

remember his profession, hmmm, that would also explain the loose screws, ;), Frank's setup works well and doesn't get in the way much, I have a traveler that goes all the way across the seats and has end controls, probably overkill, I will post a picture if I can find one, but the setup in the Harken catalog is what I used. Don Guilette has a good book, you can buy it here, I like the 2 charts and keep them on the boat. Tim

Pick up a Harken catalogue at your nearest marine hardware dealer or get one from Harken or West maring. They have illustrations on how to rig your boat in there. Good luck.

Re: Traveler setup help

I bought a 1973 Mac Venture a few weeks ago. Also, as others, I need a picture or help setting up traveler/mainsheet for this boat. Any help would be appreciated.

This re-awakens an old thread.

Here are some picts of mine. Stole it from my old Hobie set up. In fact the car came from my old Sol Cat. I have changed the setup to use a Spinlock cleats at each end. This allow me to pull the block past center so that I can bring the boom closer to center. Since I can't get to my boat ( still locked up) I don't have picks or it.
When you set up the vang bail remember to locate on the boom to clear the top when the pop top is up. On mine the top swings aft about 6".

Check out the expert forum, I asked Don about travellers on a v 22. He feels the 22 doesn't have enough sail area to really benefit from a traveller. That being said I'm still going to get rid of the big triangle setup that loves to wrap around the outboard. I have a few ideas I need to play with but I think you could shrink the triangle and fix it. Then add a ring at the midpoint top to attach a sheeting system.

Whether it's worth the trouble to set it up is a descision only you can make, I can see the difference in how the boat sails in using different combinations of mainsheet and traveller, it's training for a bigger boat, the track doesn't get in the way, if it did, I would hear about it :snooty: from the boss, all the controls are in front of you, It's easy to move the main sheet out of the way for cabin access if necessary.. I really hated the original setup, made for really nasty jibes. Here is a pic of mine finally.
