Loose traveler could be due to compressed wood
Chip,Last winter, I had the same problem, and also could not get a tool into the space inside the transom. I cut openings in the transom to get in and covered them with stailess plates when done. It looks good and will be easy to get to in the future. Also, tightening the bolts most likely will not work, because of the original wood used as a "backing plate", which is most likely compressed. While you could use steel to replace, the angles/shape is irregular, so I used some hard wood flooring pieces saturated in urethane/epoxy and cut to match the originals. They worked great.Good luck.
