Has anyone added a traveler to a Hunter 23.5. Looks to me like it would helps control things given the excessive tenderness of the craft, but i can't see any good place to put one. Thinking of trying to add some track and support around the eye where the mainsheet attaches, but?

I looked into adding one but decided the track would have to go on the seat in front of the companion way. Did not want to clutter up that location. The boat is only tender until it hits a groove between 10 and 15 degrees. This is when the ballast tank rises enough to give the boat some balance That is the right moment caused by the tank being lifted is balanced by the sail. This is why it is prudent to reef early (15 Knots) Ive sailed my 23.5 in 35 knot wind with full sail. It never went all the way over but rounding up is exciting the forestay gets rather slack at this time also. The biggest problem we had was at the dock if someone left the coffe pot on the stove it would tip over and spill as you boarded the boat. The only way around this is to either put the coffee pot in thge sink or get a boat with a heaveier keel. We have gone for a heavier keel on a larger boat.

Traveler Really Necessary??????

I assume that you have a main sail traveler on a 23.5, its just not easily adjustable. Harken makes the cars that will fit and convert the traveler to an adjustable one. If you are going to race this boat then an adjustable traveler would be helpful. If you day sail or cruise then manually adjusting the position of the main on the traveler can still be accomplished, it just takes a little more grunt. On my 1988 h23 we grunt to reposition the main on the traveler, that is located just in front of the companionway. Works fine and the quicker you do it when tacking, the less grunt it takes. Anyway, jsut have fun.

Adding a Traveler

Just happen to think after reviewing my previous post. Would it be possible to put a traveler on a bridge over the companionway on top of the cabin? I seen a lot of guys move the cockpit positioned traveler up to a bridge and it worked great. Puts the lines in a better position to make adjustments and gets it out of the cockpit. Just some more to think about.

I thought of that too

How many times would bumping your head on it make it worthwhile? That is my favorite spot to stand when someone else is doing all the work sailing the boat. I also wondered about the reduction of the angle to give it less of a mechanical advantage. I am waiting for someone to design an arch to put mine on.
