The traveler on my C22 has loosened. This traveler is the type I've seen on most C22s. That is, it's a steel rod with two ends bent to 90 degrees. The ends are threaded and held through the stern with nuts. My problem is that the space for these nuts is so tight that I cannot attach an open wrench or socket wrench onto them. I hesitate to open up the space with drilling or filing because I do not want to weaken the foundation. How can I tighten the traveler?

Tightening traveler and back stay mount

I had the same problem last winter with my "new" '74 22. I cut out a rectangle into the fiberglass on the transom inside the cockpit below each side of the transom. The holes ended up about 2" x 3" on one side and a bit more on the other. You should find decent access this way. I covered the holes with loovered stainless plates bought at West Marine and they look great. What you will find when you get in there is rotted hard wood as the backing for the screws. You most likely will not be able to tighten them further, but will need to repace the wood. I believe Catalina Direct sells replacement steel for this job. I actually used the old pieces of wood as templates for each side and created new pieces out of left over hard wood flooring(oak). Before I replaced them, I applied 2 coats of Poly for added protection. When I put it all back together, the back stay mount and traveller bar were/still are very tight. No problems to report after my first season out there. Vania
