Traveler Controls and Main Sheet Winch; Batteries

I am looking at buying a used 36 cc and am wondering about main sheet and traveler control. I have never seen this type of configuration on this large of a boat before. There does not seem to be any controls for the traveler, it is on a rail and must be set in a single position (held by a pin similarly to the jib cars). Also there is no handy winch for controling the main sheet. Has anyone had trouble with this, or have they modified the existing system? It seems to me that drawing in the main sheet while under way on a close reach would be very difficult. Also, the boat is equipped with a 70 amp starting battery and a 140 amp general use battery. Have you folks found this to be sufficient or have you upsized? If anyone has any other suggestions for things to look out for or recommendations for upgrades, I would be very thankful. Finally, if anyone wishes to contact me directly, I can be reached at mt.olympus@suscom.net Thanks and smooth sailing to you all. Larry

Buying a 36CC

Hi, I am also in the process of buying a 1999 36CC. I love the boat, and will be looking out for anything else that may be a problem. Let's stay in touch and pass notes back and forth. Captain Chuck Gassert USCG License 104231 First State Sailing and Fishing Charters, LLC. 302-545-3223

I own one

I'm entering my 3rd season with a '98 36CC. I'd be happy to answer whatever questions you may have. I haven't had an issue sheeting in the mainsail. I have the in-mast furling version as opposed to the "classic" version. It isn't a terribly large mainsail. Believe it or not, I think I still have the original house battery. I did replace the starting battery. I have found the amperage fine, though I don't put great demands on the house battery. I have a VHF, wind, speed active all the time with an auto-pilot from time to time when out sailing. I sail on Lake Michigan and have done a crossing and didn't run into any issues regarding power. I have a chartplotter, but don't really ever use it and I do not have radar. As far as upgrades, my kids love the stern seats and they do provide good seating for what is, typical of center cockpits, a smallish cockpit. I added a cleat forward near the anchor locker to take the strain off the windlass when anchored. Adding a second propane tank so that 1) you never, ever run out in the middle of preparing dinner for guests and 2) you can run the outdoor grill at the same time you have the oven going has been very useful. We did buy a cruising spinnaker this winter to aid in light-air and downwind sailing. If you wish to ask something off-list, feel free to e-mail me at dkrunnfusz@wideopenwest.com.
