the "related link" is a picture of my problem. the rubber on my car and the pieces that stop the car at the end. (what are these called?) has deterioriated the way rubber will do in the sun. can these rubber pieces be purchased seperately and replaced? if so where? if not, has anyone got a suggestion for a suitable rubber replacement? i was thinking of pieces cut from an old tire but that would be pretty hard to make. that stuff is tuff and i'm sure wouldn't drill just wonderful for the screws.

Mfg.?

I cannot make out the manufacturer's name in your picture. Rig-Rite carries a lot of traveller parts including ends and stops. Check out their catalog(Related Link) then give them a call.

Schaefer traveler hardware

The track, car and stops are made by Schaefer. Check their catalog or their website or call them direct for info. If you decide to buy the parts, shop around as you may be able to get better pricing than directly from the factory. If you're going to replace the end stops, you have to take the track up, in which case you may want to consider upgrading the traveler controls. The stock stops are set by hand, which makes it very difficult to adjust the traveler under way. I replaced the end stops with cleats and a control line but kept the stock track and the car. I can now trim the mainsail using the traveler instead of the mainsheet, which is very useful when sailing upwind in gusty conditions. I posted pictures of the setup in the Photo Forum last year. One more thing. If you do take the track up, think about bolting it back down with washers underneath instead of directly on the deck. That way, water won't collect behind the track when it rains. I didn't do that and now I wish I had. Peter H23 "Raven"

quick ? for Peter

Peter, I was just reviewing your traveler configuration from last year and was wondering how you did with this setup over the past season. I'm still interested in changing out the old system, but am not sure if I would want to use a self releasing traveler car or use your setup instead. Maybe your response will entice William as well as myself... Brian Conneely h23 kickin' back

thanks for the info

i'll look into your setup peter....and i'll definetly be putting some spacers under the track as i have noticed that it is a drainage problem waiting to happen.

Response for Brian re traveler setup

What I usually do is set the traveler for the prevailing wind conditions and leave it. If the car is not exactly in the middle of the track it has to be moved to the exact position on the the opposite side of the track when tacking. The setup works pretty well, but there are a a couple of small problems. First, the control line has to be free on the leeward side, so I have to remember to cleat it and uncleat the windward side every time before tacking. Otherwise, the car runs all the way to the far end of the track when the boat comes about. Also, the control line exit angle from the cleat is not the best. Basically I'm pulling a line that's behind me. In retrospect, a modern car with cleats on it for the control line might have been better. The Schaefer catalog has all kinds of goodies that will produce a far better setup than mine. However, since I'm not a hard-core racer and I was trying to use as much of the existing hardware as I could (less $$$), this is the setup I ended up with. I prefer to look at it as an improvement over the old system and leave it at that. Good luck. Peter H23 "Raven"
