Well I just hit a piling in my home port nav channel (!!!!!) and bent the pulpit beyond recognition. Bent and crimped in a couple spots. Am I likely to find an 85 O'Day 28 pulpit (contains the port/starboard nav lights) or do I need to go to a metal bender?

Check the store on this site first. Then check the boat junkyards. I know of one in Florida that has lots of this kind of stuff. Craig's list and eBay. I can imagine that a metal bender will be some serious dollars.

Not that I'm good, more like you brought the luck. I was checking out stern rails for my 27 and ran across this place a few days ago. They seemed to have a bunch of bow pulpits for the whole Oday line. Mine was bent when I bought the boat but I was able to cut out the old upright and weld in a new piece of tubing for about 20 bucks. I found this place in case everything went for naught. Glad I haven't gotten too senile and remembered.
I punched a piling once in my B235. The marina guy suggested tying the pulpit to a piling on the opposite side of the dock, then push the boat away. Worked for me, and in actuality, moved the pulpit forward farther than original, and no longer bounced off the furling drum!
With your description, though, it sounds beyond repair. Can you cut off the crimp and splice a new piece of SS tube to make the repair?

I also crewed on a boat that came in need of a pulpit repair. We were able to tie the boat off in a slip, then use a ratcheting come along attached to a piling to pull the pulpit straight again.
Disclaimer - This worked, but probably isn't recommended. Your mileage may vary as far as ability to straighten the pulpit in the right direction, not putting cracks in the deck, and not having a highly tensioned rope snap and fly at someone.
Most grateful to all who have weighed in on this. I could see maybe those bending tactics working a bit, but there are 2 crimps, each to about half the tube width. Have a call in to the salvage yard, but have verified an 1981 will go up on my '85, though there can occasionally be a hole alignment issue apparently. That would be the least of my worries now.
