Has anyone come up with a clever way of managing the trash on board. It seems to mount up after a couple of days. We use paper plates and plastic ware to avoid doing dishes which doesn't help, but I do crush the alumium cans somewhat. Am I doomed to always have a trash bag hanging outside a lower cabinet door. Plastic

Big Heavy Plastic Garbage Bags. When we cruise for a week or so, we are normally in a port that we can dump trash every couple of days. In between, we use small grocery bags in the cabin. When full we put they in the big heavy garbage bags tied securely to the pulpit. If you sail high winds or like to beat into the on coming surf, make sure they are heavy bags! In 90 degree weather, two or three day old fish parts found on the deck, wreak. r.w.landau

Trash Control

1. Stop using the paper plates 2. Get a set of "Unbreakable" plates and glasses 3. Go the your local pound and pick up a Beagle pup 4. Problem solved, you will have very little that go into the trash after that Ben Allen Montgomery, AL "Wahoo" O'Day 26 PS. You will also start missing socks, towels, and other clothing garments

Trash 101

Jeff, A little planning can save you a lot of trash. My wife and I have discovered that most trash is either packaging or paper. Most of the food we cook, we eat. Any left over makes for good crab bait. Definately start using reuseable (Pyrex is nice) dishes. My Hunter Legend 37 has a foot operated salt water pump thus I save on my fresh water when washing dishes. Start planning your meals. If you go off for say a weekend well you will have one or two breakfasts and two lunches and one or two dinners. Cook accordling and definately pack your food accordling. BBQ'S help keep trash low, and use heavy bags for the trash that you can compact a bit and save on space. We will put excess trash into our tender and dump it at the first available station, mind you that's usually a bag of trash that's built up for over a week. Plan your meals and save on the trash. Have fun. Barrie

Trash for 2 weeks and 5 people.

Jeff: I made a trip home from Hawaii this summer. We had 5 people aboard for 14 days and had trash stored aboard. We double bagged the trash with plastic trash bags and there was no apparent odors. We also washed dishes and our food scraps went overboard. Sailing in inland waters is not as condusive to throwing things overboard and still being environmentally correct. Regardless of where you sail "please do not throw plastics & glass" overboard. We saw a continuous trail of plastic trash from HI to CA on our way home. I must say that I really could not believe it. Most other items such as aluminum and paper degrade realitively quickly in salt water. Plastics and glass will outlast the cockroaches.

Manual Compactor

For about ten years, I have had a manual trash compactor. It is about the size of a large desk waste basket, is made of plastic, non- corroding, and I found it in an RV store. The people who make it aren't much for marketing since every boat afloat could use one. It compacts the trash to about a quarter to a third the original size, seals and keeps smells inside. Ten years ago it was about forty dollars. I tried to get West Marine interested in carrying it (it is in their colors) but no dice. I live and cook aboard, and put ALL my trash in it. Once a week I have to get rid of a smallish bag of compacted trash....wonderful! don't know if you can still find one but it is definitely worth a look.

Pre-trash removal

It always helped to buy Tupperware containers and transfer the foodstuff into them and discard the paper/plastic/styrofoam before leaving the dock. Helps stop bugs from reproducing also. Cloth napkins help. Beer bottles and crushed tin cans can be discarded in proper limits offshore. NO PLASTIC!>>>that includes you damn cruise ships!!!!
