I have a Hunter 28.5 (draft = 5' 2") and I plan to get a trailer to transport it my self anywhere I want to sail the boat (East coast, Champlain lake, Georgian bay, etc.). I wonder if it is realistic for a sailboat that size. Did anybody experiment that. How was it ? Any advise ? Thanks,

Trailering a Hunter

Martin, I'm interested in your responses. I have a '93 Hunter 28 that I would like to trailer, if practical. A friend is considering buying an older Huunter 25.5 that comes with a dual-axle Shoreline trailer, which he says is rated at 8,000 lb. He doesn't need the trailer and has offered to to me. Of course 8,000 lb. doesn't leave much of a safety margin for a 28, so I'm going to investigate the load rating and trailer size before I do anything. With a 10.5' beam, I think most states would require a special permit to trailer an H-28, probably the same situation with an H-285. Keep me posted, I'll be interested in the information you accumulate. Robert Banks, 1992 H-28 Watauga Lake, TN.

H25.5 trailer

If you can't use it, is there an asking price for that Shoreline trailer? I've got a shoal keel 25.5 and am considering what it would take if to go to different waters for vacation.

Robert, I NEED the trailer, If you don't

I have an 86' 25.5 Fin Keel, and I dresperately need a trailer for about six months. I need to move my boat from Pickwick Dam to Memphis, for about six or seven months worth of maintenance. I would like the trailer if your friend doesn't need it. Thanks

Need a GoodTow Vehicle

Check the archives I remember others talking about doing same thing, but don't forget you will need a heavyduty truck ,no suv or pickup truck is going to handle all that weight pulling and stopping, plus putting in and out the water. You will most likely need a duallywheel truck with a big engine, plus that is alot of boat up high on a trailer going down the road. I drive big trucks for a living and once thought about doing same thing but decided against it. nick

Just trailered my H27

Martin, I have a 1980 H27 w/shoal draft, 3'3''. Boat is 7,000lbs. Purchased a Venture tandem axle trailer that handles 8'200lbs. and set it up with bunks and xtra long winch tower. My 1954 Chevy P/U w/350 motor pulled just fine from Tampa Bay, FL to Rock Hall, MD. You should consider, you probly cant launch your boat from the trailer and you have to get a yard to drop and step the mast each time, that gets expensive and time consuming. Also, your but will be sitting higher on the trailer than mine so yo have to consider height from roadway to top of boat and also max. width of boat. Legal width is 8'3'' I believe. Let us know how you make out.

Guys, I'll let you know if my friend buys the boat, and if I don't buy the trailer.
