I have narrowed my search for a knotmeter to two units, one has transom mounted impeller and the other a thru hull infront of the keel. Which should i go with?

If you get a transom mount......

you can always change your mind. Once you drill that hole thru the hull it is probably there for ever! Patching up the holes on the transome are fairly easy. Cutting a hole that is 1" to 1.5" in your hull is much more drastic. Which one is going to work better? Probably the hull mounted unit will have a better reading. On the other hand they crud up easily and need to be pulled and cleaned on a regular basis. You did not mention what boat we are working with here either. Some of the smaller Hunters cannot be drilled for a thru hull fitting. What brand and model of knot meters are you looking at?

Standard makes good stuff.

Jerrit: Standard makes good stuff. If you are going through with this type of a thru hull installation, consider an instrument that is probably also very important. The depth finder. If you go with the Standard brand they have a MD50 that has water temp, speed and depth all in one display for $480. Probably a couple hundred more than the the knot meter but worth the extra expense. Do you have a fixed keel model? Check out On-line Marine for prices too. They can be found at www.onlinemarine.com PS: this is the same as the West Marine brand.
