No one wants to take a shot at my inquiry about the GPS 185 transom mounted transducer? Help before I bump the bottom.Hawaii Dan Illusions

My Hunter 30 has the transducer forward of the keel where most are fitted. Yes it adds one more hole in the hull but I have been very comfortable knowing that at low speeds as I see the ground rising underneath me I'm forewarned early on. Mounting the transducer all the way aft is a fairly good way to find out just how shallow the water WAS the second before you RAN aground without sufficient warning.

I am mounting it forward. Inside the hull. My earler post asked what type of epoxy I should use to afix it securly to the inside of the hull and still allow it to see the bottom and whatever else is down there. I'm actually mounting it forward of my older unservicable thru-hull transducer. I don't have the time/money/ for a haul-out to install a thru hull transducer.Your right a transom mounted transducer that is actually mounted on the transom would be great for telling you how deep the water is astearn when your bow is high in dry.Dan

type transducer is what (I think) you asked about originally. I've got one successfully mounted in the starboard side storage compartment in the V berth of my H30. Works great. I picked a location as far forward and as level as possible, then did a little sanding to make the surface a bit more uniform. Follow directions - make sure you have enough cable - should be no problem. Good Luck.Als/v Showtime

the lingo is a problem

Ya, What I have because I'm a cheap SOB and don't like punching holes in the hull, is the standard issue, designed to be mounted in the water, off a bracket, garmin transducer. The sales dude who sold me the unit told me if my boat had a solid hull I could mount it inside forward with some slow curing epoxy. He said that any air pockets between the transducer and the water, like in a cored hull or bubbles in the epoxy will cause a problem. Thanks for the sanding tip. What kind of epoxy should I use. It's a trick

question. The key is to have a good bond between the transducer and the hull. I've had good look with Marine Tex and would not hesitate to use it again. I'd alos check with the manufacturer to insure the transducer you have will in fact work as an "in-hull" mount. Like you I feel the fewer holes in the boat, the better.
