Has anyone used a transom mounted transducer for a knotmeter. I'm trying to find one because my thru hull fouls all the time and I need to have one that I can get to and clean. I've tried West Marine and US boat and they don't have any. Appreciate any advice on this subject.

West Marine

Page 154 of the new 2002 West Marine catalog lists a transom-mounted speed/temp transducer for Standard Horizon. Speedmate's w/TWI transducer on p. 152 also sounds interesting. Knotmeters are kind of pricy so many folks rely on their handheld GPS or simply on intuition. For cruising the GPS is good in that it isn't affected by currents. For fun one-design racing, comparing by eye your speed to a nearby competitor is effective.

Fish finder

HI, On my little C22 I use a fish finder. It not only gives me the speed, but the water temp, trip log, and finds fish! I removed the dead knot meter and depth sounder from the cabin side and filled the holes with ply and epoxy. Then I painted the area. I then put the fish finder in the same spot. The great part is that you can remove it and keep it out of the weather when not in use. Jay

Transducer

I Bought my 22 Catalina 1979 in Dec., and have been sailing it at least once a week, It has a transom mounted Transducer for the Fish finder it is a APELCO 365 model and works great as a Fishfinder and bottom depth ,water temp. etc. The winds have been very light in San Digo past 2 months but I keeped wathing the speed reading on the unit always seemed very low to me ,but did not cross check. That all changed last Tuesday wind really got up a blow! At that time I check with GPS reading and these things are almost nuts on.,as far as I could tell unit on boat was average 2 knots slow next to GPS I checked GPS average speed ETC. So from now on I disregard unit and use GPS. More feedback on this please. Unit is mounted on lower starboard transom side and is clean.

Follow up

This is my 2nd responce, Had a chance to to read my Instruction Manual for my Fishfinder Apelco 365, my unit has Calibrating for the speed sensor. I try to adjust unit today. I will use my hand held GPS (Garmin etrex) I understand GPS reads speed over ground only. but should still give best Indication of speed. If I can get unit to read speed better. my trip log should be closer to correct.
