Transmisson slipping

My friend's '81 C-30 has a Universal 11hp 2cyl. diesel with a hurth transmisson. The trans shifts ino reverse fine, but seems to slip in foward. It will eventually engage after several tries, usually at very low RPM. We have tried to adjust the linkage, but that hasn't helped. A mechanic told me to add diesel fuel to the trans fluid, but I am skeptical. Any help would be appricated.

Cat 30 trans slip

I just pulled my Universal 5411 out of an 81 Cat 30. Transmission works fine but don't know how you could get it up to Alaska. Good luck. BTW replacing it with a Universal M3-B20. Not a perfect fit but it is going in one way or another!

Chip, Is your transmission slipping out of gear (failing to stay engaged) or are the friction plates slipping while the transmission stays in gear? There is a technique of running mineral oil in place of the regular transmission oil to get the plates reconditioned. This is only done for a short while and then the oil has to be changed several times to get it all out. But I dont think this would releave the other problem of the transmission kicking out of gear (or difficulty going into gear). If your transmission is kicking out of gear then it is a different problem. You may not have full travel of the linkage. Try disconnecting at the shift lever on the transmission and shifting it by hand while down below (while the engine is running). If that works well you may need a new shift cable or a different way of attaching the cable to the lever (at the transmission end). Good luck.

Tranny Fix

I had the exact same problem this past august. Same boat but 82, same equipment. I read in the old catalina tech talks about putting in mineral sprits . it worked great. Completly empty trans. fluid. Then fill completly with mineral sprits. Shift in and out of gear numerous times till it seems to not be slipping. Drain mineral sprits and refill with tranny fluid, start and shift several times, drain and repeat with fresh tranny fluid about 3 times to get all mineral sprits out. Then refill with proper level of fluid. I used a brass plunger type pump so not to spill. It really worked great. I figured, what did I have to loose? I have taken several 100 mile plus trips afterward with no more problems at all.

Trans slip

Dear Chip, Thanks for your letter. Outside of linkage adjustment the slippage or failure of transmission, I would think, would not be permanently fixed by simply using diesel fuel. ? . If it is slipping an internal adjustment or clutch failure is taking place. I would remove the trans and have it looked at by a transmission person. Sincerely, Kevin L. Woody
